Review: Sound of Metal

Ever since The Night Of I’ve been anxiously awaiting a feature film role for Riz Ahmed that would showcase his talents. In a career best performance, Ahmed plays a punk-rock drummer who is slowly losing his hearing, and in essence, his reason for existing in The Sound of Metal. It’s a delight to see Ahmed debut his leading man chops in this film. His journey as a recovering addict trying to re-discover his purpose is beautifully told by first time feature director: Darius Rucker. I’m hopeful for a Best Actor win for Ahmed.

His girlfriend, played by a brilliant Olivia Cook, plays a big part in his recovery and development as a character, encouraging him to go to a rehab center for the hearing impaired. It’s a heartbreaking and mesmerizing film that has ground breaking sound design that’s sure to be one of the most immersive movie watching experiences this year.
